Eighteen

Lilith headed to the coffee shop to pick up a mocha for herself, some hot chocolate for Emily, and some salted caramel lattes for the cats.

By now, it was well known among the baristas that the lattes were for Mochi and Toho.

“Is it healthy for the cats to have these?” one of the young girls asked.

“These cats are super old and they enjoy the lattes. I see no harm in spoiling them,” Lilith smiled.

The barista shrugged. “They’re your cats.”

Lilith could tell that she disapproved, but wasn’t going to refuse the order, so she sat down at the table and waited.

Pru came in a few seconds later. After making her order, she sat down at the same table as Lilith, since all the other places were taken.

“How are you doing?” Lilith asked, politely.

“Things are going great for me. My fiancé and I finally set a date for our wedding,” Pru said excitedly.

“Congratulations,” Lilith said. “When is the happy day?”

“We’re going to get married next June. I always wanted to be a June bride. Plus, my mother can come up then. On top of that, we want to get married on Cowboy Mountain, and the weather is starting to get a little iffy. No one wants to get married in a foot of snow,” she said, all in one breath.

I’m sure that there are some people who think that getting married in a foot of snow would be the best thing ever.

However, Lilith decided to keep that thought to herself.

She was searching for something to say, but was saved by the barista who called her name out, letting her know that her order was ready.

“I’m glad that everything worked out for you,” Lilith said, standing. “Have a terrific day.”

“What did you mean by that?” Pru said. “Why did you say that you were glad everything worked out for me?”

Lilith had no interest in engaging in any kind of conversation with her, so she simply pretended like she hadn’t heard anything.

On the way to Waysilver, she couldn’t help but think that Pru was naive at best and an idiot at worst. She normally tried very hard not to judge other people and their choices, but she couldn’t stop herself on this one.

“Emily may be right about the odds regarding marriage. So far, there are two that aren’t likely to work out,” Lilith said to herself, thinking about Kelly and Robert’s upcoming nuptials and then Pru’s.

The one fact that Pru refused to accept is that even if Frulah had cast a spell on Pru’s fiancé and best friend, it wouldn’t have worked unless they were already inclined to sleep together. Unless a spell was out and out black magic, they couldn’t compel people to do things against their will. It was only a matter of time before Pru’s fiancé would cheat again.

Then, Lilith mentally shook herself. This was none of her concern. She had enough business on her plate to deal with—the disappearances of the men, keeping Emily safe, and figuring out who killed Frulah—without borrowing drama from someone else.
